The Union Grove
Volunteer Fire Department was established May
13, 1964 to provide fire protection and
suppression in the Union Grove community of
Iredell county in North Carolina. The Union
Grove Volunteer Fire Department also assists
with mutual aid for our neighboring fire
districts of Harmony, Central, Wilkes-Iredell,
Buck Shoals & Yadkin County. We currently staff
45 volunteers. In 1999, the Union Grove
Volunteer Fire Department established a first
responder program to assist Iredell Emergency
Medical Service in medical emergencies. All
first responders are trained and certified by
the State of North Carolina to a minimum of
Medical Responder, however 14 of our members are
trained to the Emergency Medical Technician
Basic level (EMT-B). The business side of the
organization is managed by the Board of
Directors, which are elected for 3 year terms.
The station is staffed with two personal during
the daytime hours Monday through Friday 7am - 5
pm.
How we started:
Community elders met at the Union Grove
School to discuss the need for a fire
department. At the conclusion of the meeting,
when the elders were leaving the school they
noticed a glow off in the distance. The elders
went to see what the glow was, upon arrival the
found an old building burning to the ground in
the Eagle Mills area. This sealed the deal, so
to speak, the community members raised money to
purchase building materials. The department
originally consisted of two bays and a small
meeting room, a charter and articles of
incorporation were signed May 13, 1964. The
first engine was a 1965 American LaFrance, the
second was a 1966 Ford Tanker. Before the first
engine arrived the department had grew to 40
members which were all certified firefighters.
